This is an advanced professional cookery program that establishes a strong theoretical and practical body of knowledge and skills necessary to work in a professional culinary environment. Besides culinary subjects, the course also incorporates lessons on business and entrepreneurship which will enable students to have further in-depth understanding of the industry. With guidance on entrepreneurship and setting up a restaurant, this qualification has virtually limitless opportunities for those who have the passion, talent and skill.
What is the duration of the Diploma Program?
The Diploma program runs for 12 months and includes on-campus study as well as an off-campus internship with any of our partner hotels and restaurants.
How do I enroll in the Diploma Program?
You must be 17 years old or older and a high school graduate at the start of the program. Fill out and submit an application form with the P10,000 reservation and processing fee. (The reservation fee is non-refundable but deductible from the tuition fee.)
What is included in the tuition fee? Do I have to bring my own ingredients for class
The tuition fee includes the recipe handouts, learning guide, ingredients, chefs uniform, chefs tool bag and basic knife set. We do not want our students to spend too much time sourcing for their materials and ingredients that is why these are already provided and included in the tuition, allowing more time for learning and practical hands-on kitchen work. Students have the option of purchasing extra sets of uniforms and shoes, and to add to their basic knife set. Expenses for field trips, food tours or other student initiated off-campus activities are additional costs.
What kind of job can I apply for?
When you graduate, you will be equipped with the basic and fundamental skills needed for the culinary and baking and pastry arts. With relevant industry experience and continued learning with experienced mentors, you can become a Chef. The Chef is not only a cook, but an artist, a manager, a chemist and an entrepreneur. Successful chefs constantly adapt to changing market trends and consumer tastes. Graduates can specialize in areas such as pastry, chocolate, seafood or any type of cuisine. Upon completion of the program, the graduate should have the skills needed to begin his/her career in the culinary and/or hospitality industries at an entry level. Examples of some job titles for graduates include Cook, Line Cook, Catering Assistant, Banquet Cook, Garde Manger,Baker, and Prep Cook, then eventually work their way up the culinary career ladder. The jobs mentioned are just examples of certain potential jobs in hotels, restaurants, bakeshops, coffee shops, cruise liners or catering establishments.
Will I be called a chef when I graduate?
The various titles of chef generally apply to more advanced roles in a professional kitchen (for example: Chef de Partie, Sous Chef, Executive Chef). The title of chef is earned through a combination of hard work, industry experience and continuing education or mentorship. No culinary student is considered a chef immediately upon graduation, but is encouraged to work toward becoming a Chef through the course of their careers. That title is earned and given to you by your peers when you show dedication to your profession and show recognized skill and experience in the culinary industry.
There are schools that offer longer programs like 2-4 year? Why do you offer a shorter program?
NorthPoint Academy for Culinary Arts is a TVET institution (Technical and Vocational Education and Training). We are focused on offering culinary classes with emphasis on hands-on kitchen learning and experience. In most universities and colleges that offer 2-4 year courses, students are required to take non-culinary topics such as Business, Math, English and Computer subjects. For those students who already have degree and/or wish to get started on a culinary career quickly, the extended length of these programs only adds up to wasted time and money.
